interior design

Financial strategy where creativity, projects, and profitability work together

Interior design firms manage creative work, client expectations, procurement, and cash flow across every project. Centsible helps design firm owners see project profitability and pricing clearly.

the situation

Beautiful work still needs a strong financial model

Design firms are built around talent, trust, referrals, and client experience. Behind every successful project is a financial model shaped by design fees, procurement markups, vendor deposits, client payments, project delays, staff time, installation timelines, product availability, and scope changes.

A firm can have exceptional work and loyal clients while still struggling with unclear margins, cash timing, underpriced services, or inconsistent profitability.

what design firm owners ask

Visibility by project, client, service, and procurement

  • Which projects are most profitable?
  • Are design fees priced correctly for the time involved?
  • Do procurement markups cover administrative burden and risk?
  • Do retainers and payment schedules support cash flow?
  • Are client delays or scope changes affecting margin?

where margins break down

Where design firm margin is most exposed

Underpriced Design Time

Design fees that do not reflect the true time involved leave the firm undercompensated for its most valuable work.

Procurement Complexity

Procurement markups that do not cover administrative burden and risk quietly erode margin on every order.

Client Payment Timing

Client payment timing and scope creep can create cash pressure independent of how well a project is actually performing.

Staff Utilization

Staff time that is not measured against project economics makes it difficult to see which projects are truly profitable.

how the work runs

Project economics and the cash inside them

Design firms usually know whether a year was good. They often cannot say which projects made it good. Fee structures vary from flat fee to hourly to cost plus, procurement is handled differently from client to client, and the result is that two projects of similar size can produce very different profit without anyone being able to explain why.

Centsible builds profitability by project and by fee type, including the time the studio actually spent rather than the time it planned to spend. Procurement gets looked at separately, since the margin on specified goods behaves nothing like fee income and should not be blended with it. Change orders get their own treatment, because unbilled scope is one of the most common places design profit disappears.

Cash is the other half. Client deposits, vendor prepayments, and long lead times mean a firm can hold money it has not earned while owing money it has already spent. Understanding which is which keeps a busy studio from mistaking a healthy bank balance for a healthy business. See profitability and margin clarity for how project-level analysis is structured.

common questions

What studio owners ask before they start

Our bank balance looks fine. Why does the year feel thin?

Client deposits and vendor prepayments can make a studio look liquid while the earned profit is much smaller. Separating money held on behalf of projects from money the firm has actually earned resolves it quickly.

Which fee structure is most profitable?

It depends on the studio and the project type, which is the point of measuring it. Once profitability is visible by fee type, the pattern is usually clear and specific to how you work.

How do we stop losing money on change orders?

By tracking scope changes against captured time and billing as they happen rather than at the end. Most of the loss is unbilled work rather than underpriced work.
